Shotguns come in all shapes, sizes, and rarities, but they all share a few things in common. They are hitscan (no bullet travel time), have first shot accuracy, and are invincible at medium range.

Assault rifles can also be used at long or short range, but they obviously aren't as good at those ranges as other weapon classes like shotguns or snipers. However, they are the only weapons that can be used effectively at any range, and as such should always find a place in your hot lane in the early game. If you think you can win a game of Fortnite with only SMGs and sniper rifles, you are wrong (or you are the best lobbyist).

Assault rifles are often compared to SMGs, and it's easy to see why, as both classes of weapons are large in size and have high rates of fire. But SMGs make sacrifices in their quest to be the fastest and most subtle weapons in Fortnite, while assault rifles with their measured approach and
If you're trying to take down an enemy (or structure) at very close range, the SMG will usually beat the Assault Rifle. But if you're 100 meters away, that SMG will be useless, while the AR can still happily chip away at your opponents health from afar.

Of course, it doesn't have to be an either situation. The two types of weapons occupy completely different places in Fortnite's arsenal, so it's worth learning to pick up both and switch between them quickly depending on the situation.
More like a semi-automatic sniper rifle than a standard AR, the Scoped Assault Rifle has a slower rate of fire than its rifled peers, making it much less effective, but better suited for long-range practice.
We'll take a closer look at this subset of assault rifles below, but admittedly, Scoped ARs are a completely different beast than regular ARs, and there's not much point in comparing them.
When it comes to handling this bad boy, it looks more like an SMG than a standard AR. It has a good rate of fire and can deal good damage to players and structures, but has a great reduction at longer ranges.
Could A New Assault Rifle Be Coming To Fortnite In Chapter 4?
As with the Scoped Assault Rifle, we will review this rifle in detail, but just so you know it is very different from regular ARs, and you shouldn't use it as a yardstick when referring to the two.
Now let's take a look at all the different assault rifles currently available in Fortnite and how they interact with each other, as well as their best conditions and weaknesses. Although we refer to the stats of various weapons, we haven't included them here, just refer to our Fortnite weapon guide for detailed stats on each Fortnite weapon.
The infantry rifle is a curious cross between an assault rifle and a sniper rifle, but not in the same way as the sniper rifle you'll find below. The pistol works at long range and does more damage per shot than a heavy assault rifle. Combined with its unusual lack of recoil and fast first-shot accuracy, this makes it a powerful long-range semi-auto weapon that beats the Scoped Assault Rifle at its own game many times over. The only drawback is the small size of the magnet compared to the significant rate of fire.
Patch Notes V8.20, which you can read all about in the Fortnite Patch Notes guide, made some changes to the infantry rifle. In the past, its main benefit was zero damage reduction; now it isn't and the pistol has the same shooting range as other assault rifles. But instead, the weapon is now hitscan, which means you no longer have to adjust to bullet travel times. This is a huge benefit for a weapon that Epic knows, as evidenced by their gun's further hit per shot from 45/42 to 42/40 to prevent it from being overpowered.
What's New In Fortnite Battle Royale Chapter 3 Season 1: Flipped
It's a very powerful weapon in the right hands, but you shouldn't use it as a SCAR replacement. If you want a faster firing alternative to bolt action snipers, use this as a long range option. The infantry rifle is an excellent weapon with good aim and good gameplay understanding of when to use it.
A standard assault rifle has average stats. They also each take a level of rarity, meaning there's quite a difference between the very weak Gray AR and the all-powerful Gold SCAR, especially in terms of how much each weapon blooms when fired. But overall, these ARs are fast, effective at all ranges, and great at picking off both players and formations at medium range.
While the epic or legendary SCAR isn't as dominant as it used to be, it's still a powerful item to hold onto until the end of the game. This can cause quick and painful damage, especially if you shoot in the head, which is likely given the low accuracy of the first shot and the SCAR's boom; and can also be used to pressure enemies and disrupt construction at ranges beyond the SMG's capabilities.
Due to its rarity, Drum Gun can be a monster. The drum gun, found only in rare and rare cases, has good accuracy, a fast rate of fire and a strong impact. However, this gun is so good to use that it is good to shoot in many situations, even when shooting from the side.

It's hindered by the incredibly long reload time on the uncommon level, but if you manage to pull off a rare, you'll be laughing as you rain down a hail of bullets on your enemies. Combine this with a long-range weapon solution, such as your sniper rifle of choice, and you're ready to play.
Oh This gun packs a big punch. Available in rare, epic, and legendary colors, this weapon does significantly more damage per shot than any assault rifle, and makes all of its other stats slightly worse to balance it out. Slower rate of fire, smaller clip size, longer reload time and more recoil and recoil to deal with. But seriously, you get about a 50% damage increase with every hit above SCAR. It's just disgustingly strong.
