Blue Angels Youtube - Watching the navy blue angels take flight has to be one of the most awe-inspiring sights you can witness. The skill level required to fly the plane is undoubtedly high, but the pilot certainly looks effortless.

Have you ever seen a fleet that "sneak"? According to the Blue Angels, this would involve flying at the speed of sound at 700 miles per hour and only 50 feet. Sounds intense, right?

Many residents of Naval Air Facility El Centro, California, felt this intensity firsthand. In January 2021, an F/A-18 Super Hornet flew a short distance near two buildings, causing $180,000 in damage and injuring approximately 12 people.

What is the real cause of this damage? When the jet breaks the sound barrier, it creates physically visible sound waves. These sound waves shook the building so badly that they tossed debris around, including drywall and nails pulled from the framing.

Curious about what a "pass" looks like? This is a video of the maneuver where you can hear the sound of the Blue Angels breaking the sound barrier.

Fortunately, the California incident is not entirely the fault of the pilots. According to a recent article, the investigation found that the jets themselves were "one of the largest contributors." The Navy commented:

From 1992 to 2020, the Blue Angels flew F/A-18 Hornets. However, the team will begin flying the F/A-18 Super Hornet beginning in the 2021 season. This Super Hornet is larger and heavier than the older Hornets, but offers greater range and lower maintenance requirements...

The Seattle Times said it was the first time an incident had occurred while performing a "stealth pass." However, it is better to be safe than sorry.

So, if you've seen the Blue Angels "pass" in the past, it's going to look a little different now. The Navy made some changes to the ticket to prevent further incidents.

Based on redesigning the airflow signature... These revisions greatly reduce the chance of a repeat while best preserving the spirit of the maneuver.

Regardless of the changes, seeing the Navy Blue Angels is an event that everyone should experience at least once. On July 9, they will be in Pensacola Beach, Florida for the Pensacola Beach Air Show. I saw them there for the first time in a year. Bay Airfest.

Four years later, the US Navy Blue Angels will fly over Tampa on March 26-27 for the Tampa Bay AirFest.

Hosted by MacDill Air Force Base, the event is traditionally held every two years. However, it was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has not been organized since 2018.

This year, AirFest plans are subject to change due to the nature of the pandemic. However, AirFest will be free admission and a family activity.

General admission is free, but a limited number of premium seating tickets are available this year to keep attendees safe.

To minimize traffic congestion, attendees can take advantage of the HART bus rapid transit routes created for AirFest 2022. Buses run every 15 minutes between Britton Plaza and the base throughout the day.

The event will feature a variety of military and civilian air displays including the Blue Angels, F-22 Demo Team and Para-Commandos.

Along with the performances, you can see various exhibitions. Displays include civilian aircraft, helicopters, tankers and more.

One of the exhibits includes 24 new KC-46 tankers that MacDill recently began hosting. The tanker is the next generation of aerial refueling support for the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps and is equipped with a display that visitors can see.

Small areas such as aircraft cockpit screens are blocked off to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. However, larger spaces are open and masks are recommended but not required.

All schedules of exhibitions and performances will be published before March 1. Schedules and other weekend information can be found on the AirFest website.

The demonstration team recently upgraded their aircraft from the 'Legacy Hornet' to the new and improved FA-18 Super Hornet. Want to know why the Blue Angels Super Hornet is king? Keep reading as you will soon find out.

The FA-18 Super Hornet is approximately 25% larger than its predecessor. And bigger is definitely better! According to former Squadron Leader Captain Eric 'Popey' Doyle, the increased wingspan of the new Super Hornet will 'shut out the sun'!

Why Blue Angels Super Hornet Is King

A larger size does not mean that the displayed screen will be slower. It will be loud, fast and exciting, with a top speed of 1,190 mph and a huge jet engine that produces more than 22,000 pounds of thrust.

The Super Hornets General Electric F414 engine provides about 35% more thrust than its predecessor, which translates to plenty of speed and power.

Watching an air show is even better when the technology on display is cutting edge. The Blue Angels Super Hornet, also known as the 'Rhino', is the latest, new and improved version of the older FA-18 aircraft. With a new aircraft comes new challenges for the display team, but you can be there to join in the excitement and watch them figure out the latest upgrades.

Some have drawn parallels between the Blue Angels' latest fleet upgrade and the effectiveness of similar upgrades in the past.

Blue Angel Phantoms (podcast)

The 1960s and 1970s were considered the golden age of hunting technology development. During this time, the Blue Angels went through a similar process in purchasing McDonnell-Douglas F4 Phantoms. Just as the F4 Phantom once wowed the masses, so will today's Super Hornet.

The F4 and Super Hornet have similar wingspans, but the Super Hornet provides more thrust and power. Still, watching the Blue Angels perform will give you the same excitement that people enjoyed decades ago when they saw the latest fleet upgrade.

The planes are still flown by human pilots, but their abilities are enhanced with some super smart technology. i.e. computer. Fly-by-wire means that there is no mechanical connection between the stick and the flight controls. Instead, pilot inputs are entered into a computer, which moves the control surface accordingly.

The maneuvers performed by the Blue Angels will be much more precise and perfect! Considering they travel at speeds of up to 400 miles per hour, this sight is truly spectacular!

Blue Angels Jet Causes Over $100k In Building Damages

If you watch the action of the new Blue Angels Super Hornet, you will witness something very unique. The Super Hornet itself is an upgrade, but the model shown on the Blue Angels display is even more modified.

For starters, the cockpit controls have been modified to provide more feedback to the pilot and allow for more precise control movements. The aircraft was also upgraded with a special fuel pump that was not found on the standard military version. This pump allows the aircraft to fly upside down for extended periods of time.

The Blue Angels Super Hornet is also equipped with a smoke screen tank so you can see it from afar. That's a good thing, because you won't want to miss them!

Fly-by-wire essentially allows the pilot to push the aircraft to the max. This is what you want to see at an air show. The Blue Angels Super Hornet allows you to watch pilots take their aircraft to the 'edge of the envelope'.

The new aircraft will present a challenge to the display team and you will see first hand how well they meet these challenges.

According to current pilots, the Super Hornet behaves slightly differently than previous versions of the FA-18. As a result, they will be just as excited to see the aircraft accelerate in real time.

The Blue Angels Super Hornet presentation means you'll be witnessing a display like you've never seen before.

Fly-by-wire is revolutionary in what aircraft can achieve. They also guide pilots to design solutions when they are constrained by the system. In normal flight, there are certain maneuvers that the computer forbids the pilot. However, the team wants to see the aircraft in its best condition, so the program has been specially tuned so that the display is still as entertaining as before.

The Blue Angels Us Navy

Don't think that all Super Hornets are good looking. This is a seriously mean airplane in day-to-day operation. It has been used with devastating effect on active battlefields around the world.
