Browning P 35 - What is a combat pistol archetype? Many corn-fed Americans offer John Moses Browning's timeless 1911 book.

However, for pure, unfiltered historical significance, it could be argued that the P35 Hi-Power has shaped the military and civilian weapons landscape more profoundly than any other design in history. It is actually based on the incredibly popular Springfield SA-35 pistol.

The story of John Browning's Hi-Power is an extraordinary one. However, he often played second fiddle to the rifle after 1911.

Meet Browning's High Power Gp35 Handgun: A Gun Too Far Ahead Of Its Time?

Although many people know this pistol as the John Browning Hi-Power, the P35 pistol was actually a collaborative effort. John Moses Browning started the project but died in 1926 before it was completed. His pupil Dieudonne Saive completed work on the weapon in 1935.

The pistol design these two men created influenced virtually every subsequent combat pistol, as well as many civilian handgun offerings seen in the decades since its introduction.

Browning was the most prolific weapons designer in human history and had 128 patents at the time of his death. He designed all of the belt-fed machine guns used by the United States during World War II. The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) and 37mm cannon used on the Bell Airacobra fighter were also his babies.

Dieudonne Saive was responsible for the FN 1949 semi-automatic rifle. His work also led to the development of the highly versatile FAL rifle. The joint efforts of these two boys changed everything.

In 1921, the French government requested a new weapon that could carry 10 9mm rounds. Browning built this rifle using his 1911 as a starting point. Sayo built a double-column, single-feed 15-round box magazine and mated it to a modified FN Model 1903 pistol.

When you look at it from this angle, the Hi-Power's sleek lines are revealed. It proved to be a classic design that was emulated by others.

Browning's son Val, after a backlog of inventions, came up with what would become the Hi-Power four months after his father's death. It was called an early pistol

Or "Hi-Power". The end result included Saive's revolutionary box magazine, which now holds 13 rounds to keep the pistol from being too bulky. After so much effort, the French finally got the GP-35 and opted for the Model 1935 indigenous pistol.

The Hi Power Was Dead, Then Came The Sa 35…

As the French passed, the rest of the planet thought the Belgian Hi-Power was the bee's knee. When the Germans conquered Belgium in 1940, 56,000 copies had been sold. The Germans forced the Belgians to withdraw the weapons under occupation and called their own version the Pistol 640(b). b represents Belgium. The Nazis used around 65,000 Hi-Power pistols, mostly among the Waffen SS and Fallschirmjagers.

Sayo fled to London with the Hi-Power plans in mid-1941. He went to work at Enfield in Cheshunt, England, preparing the Hi-Power for Allied production. In April 1943, the Chinese requested 180,000 energy guns for use in their bitter fight against the Japanese.

During World War II, Hi-Power came in two broad flavors. The weapon on the left is a standard Canadian version. The basic model on the right was built in Nazi-occupied Belgium.

The Chinese contract was awarded to Canadian company John Inglis and Company. The Chinese specified that the weapons included a wooden shoulder vest similar to the C96 broomstick. Handel's broom had a fanatical following among Chinese soldiers, who affectionately referred to it as a "box cannon".

Many of these weapons ended up being diverted for use among Allied forces fighting in Europe. The first weapon to see action was in Operation Varsity, the air raid across the Rhine in 1944. The Hi-Power subsequently had the dubious distinction of being the only production firearm to see a common problem between Allied and French forces. Axle.

The Hi-Power came in two wide variants. Simpler had basic fixed sights. The more sophisticated version featured a slotted handle for a detachable shoulder mount and a ramp-adjustable rear sight that was optimistically calibrated to 500 meters. The holster stock had a web belt hanger.

The beating heart of Hi-Power is its short linkless operating system. If you've never seen the insides of a Hi-Power before, just pull out the most modern combat pistols and watch how the barrel interacts with the bolt. This is a Hi-Power. This inspired cam mechanism locks the barrel and slides together at the moment of firing, but allows the two components to separate under recoil to affect the cycle of action.

Many Hi-Power pistols include a controversial magazine disconnect safety that slightly affects the character of the single-action trigger. Most German war guns avoided this feature.

The Springfield Armory Hellcat is shown on the left. Browning Hi-Power is on the right. The basic common mechanistic philosophy is self-evident.

The Mr. Saive is now the accepted standard worldwide. The mages who developed the Springfield Armory Hellcat somehow crammed the same number of shells into less space, but the basic concept is now everywhere.

Browning's Hi-Power is a unique tactical rifle. I have big monkey fingers and the Hi-Power is perfect for me. Normal people are also fine with guns.

The single action trigger is pretty good. Magazine launch and thumb safety is right where Mr. Browning put them in the 1911. Used magazines are not snapped into place when the magazine is removed, but the baseplate provides a convenient attachment point.

Hammerheads come in both looped and barbed varieties, although the beavertail tail is a bit stingy. Let your fork get too high and Hi-Power could overwhelm your web space. Regardless, the Hi-Power is my favorite WWII era pistol.

The Hi-Power was eventually adopted as the standard service pistol by over 50 military personnel. It has been widely used in 93 countries among military and law enforcement agencies.

Muammar Gaddafi died accompanied by a gold-plated Hi-Power with his image on the forks. Even at the height of the information age, the classic Hi-Power remains competitive. Its unlinked action and seemingly full capacity magazine inspired just about everything you see today.

The Browning Hi-Power is a single-action semi-automatic pistol available in 9x19mm Parabellum and .40 S&W calibers. It was built to a design by American firearms inventor John Browning and completed by Dieudonné Saive at FN Herstal. Browning died in 1926, several years before the project was completed. FN Herstal called it "High Power" in allusion to the magazine capacity of 13 rounds, almost double that of other designs of the time such as the Luger or the Colt M1911.

During World War II, Belgium was occupied by Nazi Germany and the FN factory was used by the Wehrmacht to manufacture a pistol for its army called "9mm Pistole 640(b)".

FN Herstal moved its production line to the John Inglis and Company factory in Canada, continuing to manufacture weapons for the Allied forces, where it was renamed "Hi Power". This name change was retained after production moved back to Belgium. The pistol is often referred to as the HP or BHP.
