building ar pistol

Building Ar Pistol - There's nothing better than shooting a sleek and powerful augmented reality gun…other than shooting a gun you've assembled from your favorite custom parts. So why doesn't everyone jump aboard the gun assembly express? One word: feds. But with a little dexterity and a good knowledge of local gun laws, you too can build a cool AR gun with confidence.

Attention. This article is for educational purposes only; this should not be construed as legal advice. You are ultimately responsible for your actions and we advise you to seek the advice of a lawyer in your area before attempting to build any AR gun.

The first question you might want to ask is "Why is it better to choose an AR pistol over a standard rifle?" My first response would be "Why not both?" Seriously though, the AR pistol offers plenty of maneuverability, especially in tight spaces, and depending on your setup, it can give you most of what a standard AR-15 carbine does. Also, if you plan to use a suppressor, a shorter barrel will give you a rifle-like overall length.

Gone are the days of having a small gasket on the buffer tube. Feel free to add a gun stabilizer to your selection!

While the AR gun may be lighter and more maneuverable, it does have some downsides. Because you have a shorter barrel, you'll get less velocity from the caliber you choose. This is a bigger problem for some than for others. For example, lightweight 5.56 NATO bullets derive most of their power from velocity, but the .300 AAC Blackout was specifically designed for shorter barrels. Do a little research on your intended caliber and see what barrel length is best for you.

Also, an AR pistol will have more muzzle blast, shock, and felt recoil than a comparable rifle. This is most noticeable indoors and is a factor to consider depending on where you are shooting and the intended use of the firearm.

The first thing to note when creating a custom build is to make sure you comply with local and state gun laws. Call your local FFL. They should be able to get this information fairly easily. However, classification of short rifles should generally be avoided. How are they classified? A rifle with a barrel less than 16 inches or an overall length of less than 26 inches will net you an unwanted NFA (National Firearms Act) tax of $200. Also, per ATF guidelines, AR pistols equipped with spacers must not have a draw length greater than 13.5 inches - in other words, when fully extended, the distance between the trigger and the trailing edge of the spacer must not exceed 13.5 inches.

Another important note is how the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) defines a rifle and a pistol. In short, a rifle is everything with a stock that you fire from your shoulder. The ATF defines a pistol as "... a weapon originally designed, manufactured and intended to fire a projectile(s) from one or more barrels when held in one hand and having: chamber(s) as integral part(s) or permanently aligned with bore( holes); and a short stock designed to be held with one hand at an angle and below the line of the bore(s). But wait. I've seen a lot of AR guns that look almost exactly like an AR rifle. What does it give? And how do they avoid the NFA tax? Answer? Gun staples.

In an open letter to BATFE, it was asked whether a brace, which traditionally has grips or wrist straps to help the shooter stabilize the shot when firing single-handed (which fits our definition of a handgun), would still classify a firearm as a handgun, even if the shooter "accidentally" put the end of the brace on his arm. Initially, their response stated that this type of arm qualifies the weapon as an SBR under the NFA. However, in 2017 this statement was changed to read:

"Regarding the stabilizing harness, the ATF concluded that attaching a shackle to a pistol as a forearm brace does not make the gun short because ... it is not designed to be fired from the shoulder and cannot be fired comfortably ... Therefore, NFA firearms are not must be manufactured unless the device is reconfigured for use as a stock, even if the attached firearm is fired from the shoulder."

So, if you're looking to add a little extra stability to your brace design, BATFE has given the go-ahead.

Adding a shackle to your AR pistol gives you the same benefits as a stock but doesn't require additional legal paperwork.

The most important thing to make your build legal is to leave it in the "gun" definition. Here's how:

Indeed, if you follow these guidelines along with local laws, it shouldn't be difficult to build a legal AR gun. Now, since I know you're interested, here are some of my favorite components when creating an AR.

Be sure to use an angled front grip like this Magpul AFG2 because you can't use a vertical grip on a handgun without reclassifying the firearm as a short rifle.

You know what they say: opinions are like… AR-15s, everyone has them and everyone has them differently. There are billions of them and everyone is different. With so many AR-15 options, from really inexpensive to custom and overpriced, the choices are endless. There's also a way to get a great AR-15 for a really good price: build it yourself. Building a cannon around the Aero Precision AR-15 upper and lower receivers is one of the best ways to get the job done.

Self-assembly and assembly of the AR-15 from parts and components of your choice is very simple. This can often be cheaper than a comparable off-the-shelf ready-made weapon. With this approach, you can either get more guns for less money, or you can get the exact gun you want. And even then, sometimes for less. We call it a bigger bang for every dollar. I'm sorry. I could not resist.

Experiment Alpha: My design based on Aero Precision AR-15 receivers is, in my opinion, almost perfect. Of course, we return to the opinion-forming part.

Building A Compact Takedown .300 Blk Ar Pistol

This may be a touchy topic for some people, but hear me out. Is it possible to spend more money on parts and components of certain brands? Of course. Does this always lead to "better" weapons? Mm, probably not.

At some point, it all comes down to the shooter. I'd say my gun will pierce more than its weight, and I'd happily put it next to more expensive guns all day long. However, you must remember that there is a point of diminishing returns in terms of price and fancy gadgets. Besides, the gun won't hit the target for you. It's all up to you, my friend.

Over the years I have met many shooters who only believe in custom builds. It's sort of a "virtuous signal" in the gun community. To them, if you haven't built your own rifle or carbine, then it's somehow "not good enough" or you're not "orthodox". Whatever. I will also carry a Daniel Defense rifle with me throughout the day. There are other great brands ready to go.

Having said that, for those of you who have never built a custom build because you thought you didn't have the skills or couldn't afford it, the Aero Precision AR-15 is for you. Aside from all the customization and pricing reasons, it's just plain fun. And it is rewarded.

Why am I starting recommendations for building an AR-15 with Aero Precision as the main gun landing gear? Simply put, they make great components at a great price. Of course, as we all know, there are more expensive and perhaps even slightly better custom parts and components.
